From the end of the 1950s, the need for cheap labour in the town's textile industries drew in migrant labourers from Gujarat, Punjab and other parts of modern day Pakistan and India. The South Asian population of Batley is now around 30%. Batley has an Asian Muslim population made of people from Pakistan and the Indian state of Gujarat.
