Due to being based on the aforementioned television program which is aimed for young children aged 1–8, as well as the growing popularity of "anti-Barney humor", the film received negative reviews from upon film critics and was nominated for two awards at the 19th Golden Raspberry Awards: "Worst New Star" and "Worst Original Song".

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently has a "Rotten" score of 26%, based on 23 reviews with only 6 fresh reviews, and a rating of a 4.2 out of 10. It is currently 87th among IMDB's Bottom 100 as of September 23, 2011.

Despite the negative reception, this film has garnered infamously to be a cult classic towards various fans of the Barney franchise.
