Bangladesh Textile Industry - Employment and Labor

Employment and Labor

Bangladesh’s garment exports – mainly to the US and Europe – make up nearly 80% of the country’s export income. The country has more than 4,000 factories employing between two and three million workers. The industry currently employs 1.5 million workers, approximately 80% of whom are women, many working in hazardous social conditions. It has been a major source of employment for rural migrant women in a country that has increasingly limited rural livelihood options, and where women migrants have been largely excluded from formal work in the cities.

Famous quotes containing the words employment and/or labor:

Combining paid employment with marriage and motherhood creates safeguards for emotional well-being. Nothing is certain in life, but generally the chances of happiness are greater if one has multiple areas of interest and involvement. To juggle is to diminish the risk of depression, anxiety, and unhappiness.
    Faye J. Crosby (20th century)

Women of a selected class, by the use of slaves and servants have become inactive, the mere recipients of values, no longer creators but “feeding on unearned wealth.” This hurts their nature and debases the social fabric. If a woman does no labor in her home which could properly make her self-supporting outside that home she is in duty bound to do something outside her home to justify her claim to support.
    Anna Garlin Spencer (1851–1931)
