He was retired to stud in 1979 and stood with moderate success in New Zealand, where he sired 29 stakeswinners of 80 stakes races.
His group one winners were:

- Bounty Hawk (WATC Australian Derby, WATC Western Mail Classic, VRC LKS Mackinnon Stakes, VATC Underwood Stakes, Victoria Derby etc.)
- Dinky Flyer (AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes)
- Donegal Mist (AJC Metropolitan Handicap)
- Eastern Classic (AJC All-Aged Stakes)
- Linc The Leopard (WATC Perth Cup)
Balmerino died in 1996. He was inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.
