Honors and Tributes

Balchen was a winner of the Harmon Trophy in aviation, as well as a recipient of the following military decorations:

  • U.S. Air Force Distinguished Service Medal
  • Legion of Merit
  • U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross
  • U.S. Air Medal (for all services)
  • American Campaign Medal
  • European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal
  • World War II Victory Medal
  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Knighthood of The Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. (Norway's highest honor)

Following his death, Balchen was buried at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. He is buried in Section 2, grave 4969, next to Richard E. Byrd.
