The Renegade Rip, winner of the Associated Collegiate Press National Pacemaker Award in 2003-2004, is the student-run newspaper within the journalism department at Bakersfield College. Published biweekly, The Rip currently has a circulation of approximately 4,000. An online edition is also available.

Rip reporters and photographers cover the campus, which rests "on the bluffs" in Bakersfield, California. The students cover topics ranging from crime on campus, to student profiles, sports and local entertainment. The tradition of The Renegade Rip has always been to chase news stories and focus on what affects the student body at Bakersfield College and the community of Bakersfield as a whole.

The Rip is a regular contender and recipient of JACC (Journalism Association of Community Colleges) awards at both the state and regional levels. They are a member of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges and compete in the Southern California region.

Famous quotes containing the words college and/or journalism:

Jerry: She’s one of those third-year girls that gripe my liver.
    Milo: Third-year girls?
Jerry: Yeah, you know, American college kids. They come over here to take their third year and lap up a little culture. They give me a swift pain.
    Milo: Why?
Jerry: They’re officious and dull. They’re always making profound observations they’ve overheard.
    Alan Jay Lerner (1918–1986)

In journalism it is simpler to sound off than it is to find out. It is more elegant to pontificate than it is to sweat.
    Harold Evans (b. 1928)
