Bailey College

The Bailey colleges are a group of colleges of Durham University that are located on The Bailey, or The Peninsula, an historic area around North and South Bailey street in the centre of Durham, England. The colleges usually considered the Bailey Colleges are:

  • University College
  • Hatfield College
  • St John's College
  • St Cuthbert's Society
  • St Chad's College

The Bailey colleges are much older than most of the Hill colleges. They are more traditional in outlook and all require the wearing of gowns at either matriculation, JCR meetings or Formals, except the traditionally informal St Cuthbert's Society. Two of the Bailey colleges, St Chad's College and St John's College, are independent self-governing colleges.

An enduring rivalry exists between the Hill colleges and the Bailey colleges as exemplified by the 'Hill versus Bailey rugby match'. This groups the College of St Hild and St Bede as one of the Bailey colleges and those on Queen's Campus as Hill colleges.

Famous quotes containing the words bailey and/or college:

All that Swinging Sixties nonsense, we all thought it was passé at the time.
    —David Bailey (b. 1938)

I never went near the Wellesley College chapel in my four years there, but I am still amazed at the amount of Christian charity that school stuck us all with, a kind of glazed politeness in the face of boredom and stupidity. Tolerance, in the worst sense of the word.... How marvelous it would have been to go to a women’s college that encouraged impoliteness, that rewarded aggression, that encouraged argument.
    Nora Ephron (b. 1941)
