The total population of the district according to the 1998 census was 395,000, which is estimated to have increased to 434,000 in 2003, with an annual growth rate of 2%. The principal clans are the Muslims, Pathans (Afridi). 'Abbasi', Rajputs(Khakha, Janjua, Jarral, Thakial Rujputs, Junhal, Minhas, Narma, Sulehria), Maldiyal Mughal, Douli Mughal, Magray, Syed's ( GARDEZI'S), Sudhan, Awan, Gujjars, Qureshi, Mankas, Domaal, AND .

MALDIYAL MUGHALS: Major Tribe in District Bagh is Mughal Tribe. Heath Minister Farmer Senior Minister AJK QAMAR ZAMAN Belong to this Family.

Khakha Rajput: About 6000 of Khakha Rajput is present currently in Bagh AJK. Raja Yasin X-Advisor to AJK Govt belongs to this family. He is from village Jaglari. There are other areas where Khakha Rajput are living e.g. Mera,Kayyat,Naryola,Bhoat and Aawara.

Syeds.It is one of the major Tribes (JAFRI-AL-GARDEZI) enjoying "spiritual" respect and are commonly known as "PEERS".Syed Sadiq Hussain Shah,Sohawi,Syed Khadim Hussain,"Shaheed-e-Awal",Syed Hassan Shah Gardezi,Advocate Syed Saeed Hussain Shah,Brigadier Syed Akhtar Hussain Shah, Syed Bashir Hussain Jafri (Historian and Advisor Chaudhary Gulam Abbas Chair, Azad Kashmir University AJK), Brigadier Syed Intekhab Hussain Shah and Syed Imtiaz Hussain Shah, Advocate, Advisor to P M AJ&K belong to this Tribe.
