School For Environmental Sciences

The School for Environmental Sciences (SES) is an important interdisciplinary faculty with an objective to include advanced studies and innovative research in aspects of environmental sustainability. It aims to evolve as a Center of Excellence on issues pertaining to environmental issues and challenges of the contemporary world, spheres securing sustainable development of the country emphasizing improved environmental resources. The Department of Environmental Science (DES) under SES is running a two-year full-time M.Sc. Environmental Science since its inception in July 1997. It started another two-year M.Sc. course in the Session 2007-08 as Environmental Microbiology with emphasis on industrial waste management. The department also offers Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Science. There are three professors, one reader and five lecturers in the department from specializations ranging from Environmental Microbiology, Stress Physiology, Environmental Biotechnology, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Microbial Ecology, Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Management etc.

The department has shifted to a new building with a Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL), Central Research Lab, M.Sc. Environmental Science Lab and M.Sc. Environmental Microbiology. For CIL certain major equipment, e.g., Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, HPLC, Fluorescence Spectrophotometer, UV-Vis-double beam Spectrophotometer, Trinocular Microscope with Phase Contrast and fluorescent facilities are in process. A Field Research Laboratory with Green House, Net House and Tissue Culture facility has also been established.

The department organizes regular seminars during weekends for the students, where students speak on topics of their choice, to harness their oration skills and to create general awareness on different aspects of environmental issues. The department is actively organizing special programmes on current topics in environmental science from time to time. The department takes pride in not missing the celebration of Ozone Day, World Environment Day, poster competition and Wildlife Week. Students regularly participate in the extracurricular activities such as debate competitions, essay writing, cultural and sports activities organized by the university.

The Department of Environmental Science has 10 faculty members engaged in postgraduate teaching and research with their specialized area of work. The current emphasis is on developing individual core thematic research group with specializations of environmental sciences integrating its interdisciplinary nature. The main research activities of the department are provided below:

  • Environmental stress on the growth response of medicinal plants
  • Bioremediation of environmental contaminants including heavy metals
  • Soil health and management
  • Synegistic effect of herbicides and air pollutants on plants
  • Physiological response and mechanism of metal tolerance in lichens of Garhwal Himalayas
  • Land use modelling, water resource management, environmental planning, remote sensing & GIS

Famous quotes containing the words school and/or sciences:

School divides life into two segments, which are increasingly of comparable length. As much as anything else, schooling implies custodial care for persons who are declared undesirable elsewhere by the simple fact that a school has been built to serve them.
    Ivan Illich (b. 1926)

All the sciences are now under an obligation to prepare for the future task of philosopher, which is to solve the problem of value, to determine the rank order of values.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
