The city was promoted from the town of Ba Ria in 22 August 2012. The town was founded on 2 June 1994 from the split of district of Châu Thành into districts of Châu Đức, Tân Thành, and Ba Ria town. Many provincial agencies have been relocated from Vang Tau to Ba Ria. Ba Ria is the de facto the provincial seat but officially Vũng Tàu is still the de jure province's capital. By 2007, This city is 3rd-class municipacity in Viet Nam.
