He received his B.S. in Chemistry and Mathematics at the University of Houston in December 1975, and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Houston in May 1980 under the tutelage of Dr. Peter J. Rossky.

He was a Postdoctoral Fellow both at the University of Texas at Austin (1980-1983) and at Harvard University under the tutelage of Martin Karplus (1983-1985).

In 2004 he was affiliated with the Institute for Molecular Design, the The W.M. Keck Center and the Ph.D. program in Structural and Computational Biology and Molecular Biophysics (SCBMB) at Baylor College of Medicine. He is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles.
