B. K. S. Iyengar - Early Years

Early Years

B.K.S. Iyengar was born into a poor Iyengar family. He was the 11th of 13 children of father Sri Krishnamachar, a school teacher, and mother Sheshamma. Iyengar's home village of Bellur, in Karnataka, was in the grips of the influenza pandemic at the time of his birth, leaving him sickly and weak. Throughout his childhood, he struggled with malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, and general malnutrition. Iyengar's father died when he was 9 years old.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or years:

We have been told over and over about the importance of bonding to our children. Rarely do we hear about the skill of letting go, or, as one parent said, “that we raise our children to leave us.” Early childhood, as our kids gain skills and eagerly want some distance from us, is a time to build a kind of adult-child balance which permits both of us room.
    Joan Sheingold Ditzion (20th century)

What a lesson here for our world. One blast, thousands of years of civilization wiped out.
    Kurt Neumann (1906–1958)
