Subspecies
There are currently three subspecies recognized, however their status is questioned and species may be monotypic:
- Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis (Ayu sweetfish)
- Plecoglossus altivelis chinensis
- Plecoglossus altivelis ryukyuensis (Ryukyu ayu-fish)
