Athletics
Ave Maria teams, nicknamed athletically as the Gyrenes, are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division I level, primarily competing in The Sun Conference, formerly known as the Florida Sun Conference (FSC); while its football team competes as an Independent. In 2011, it became the first college in southwestern Florida to field a football team. Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer and tennis; while women's sports include basketball, cheerleading, dance, cross country, golf, softball, tennis and volleyball.
