AVANCE - History

History

AVANCE's name derives from the Spanish word for “advance” It originally started in 1973 as a 500-unit public housing development serving 35 families in San Antonio, Texas. Currently it encompasses over 100 programs across U.S.A. The number of participants in its early childhood education/parenting and family support services number several thousand. The concept of the organization was based on the educational theories of Dr. Urie Bronfenbrenner, of Cornell University, and whose graduate students established the first AVANCE Mother-Infant program in Dallas, Texas in 1973. The founders received start-up funding from the Zale Corporation which allowed for an expansion of the Mother-Infant program to San Antonio.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

A man acquainted with history may, in some respect, be said to have lived from the beginning of the world, and to have been making continual additions to his stock of knowledge in every century.
    David Hume (1711–1776)

Modern Western thought will pass into history and be incorporated in it, will have its influence and its place, just as our body will pass into the composition of grass, of sheep, of cutlets, and of men. We do not like that kind of immortality, but what is to be done about it?
    Alexander Herzen (1812–1870)

Perhaps universal history is the history of the diverse intonation of some metaphors.
    Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986)
