Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia - in Children

In Children

AIHA in children generally has a good prognosis and is self-limiting. However, if it presents within the first two years of life or in the teenage years, the disease often follows a more chronic course, requiring long term immunosuppression, with serious developmental consequences. The aim of therapy may sometimes be to lower the use of steroids in the control of the disease. In this case, splenectomy may be considered, as well as other immunosuppressive drugs. Infection is a serious concern in patients on long-term immunosuppressant therapy, especially in very young children (less than two years).

Famous quotes containing the word children:

You must not feel too anxious about the little folks with you.... Their little peculiarities, which with your older judgment do not seem favorable, will gradually disappear as they get older. It is best to overlook most things, and not be too solicitous about perfection. I am afraid you will think I will spoil our children by too little government. Perhaps we do err on the other side, but you must come down and instruct us.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

I’m afraid the visit of such a distinguished critic may cause my children to become conceited. To you they are wax, but to me, their creator, they live and breathe.
    Crane Wilbur (1889–1973)
