Austrian Space Agency

The Austrian Space Agency is an organization whose purpose is to coordinate Austrian space exploration-related activities, both national programs and European Space Agency related programs. It was established in 1972 in Vienna. In 1987, Austria became a member state of the European Space Agency.

ASA is notable for coordinating the first space flight of an Austrian, that of engineer Franz Viehböck with a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 1990.

Famous quotes containing the words austrian, space and/or agency:

The war shook down the Tsardom, an unspeakable abomination, and made an end of the new German Empire and the old Apostolic Austrian one. It ... gave votes and seats in Parliament to women.... But if society can be reformed only by the accidental results of horrible catastrophes ... what hope is there for mankind in them? The war was a horror and everybody is the worse for it.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

When Paul Bunyan’s loggers roofed an Oregon bunkhouse with shakes, fog was so thick that they shingled forty feet into space before discovering they had passed the last rafter.
State of Oregon, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

It is possible that the telephone has been responsible for more business inefficiency than any other agency except laudanum.... In the old days when you wanted to get in touch with a man you wrote a note, sprinkled it with sand, and gave it to a man on horseback. It probably was delivered within half an hour, depending on how big a lunch the horse had had. But in these busy days of rush-rush-rush, it is sometimes a week before you can catch your man on the telephone.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)
