Australian Rules Football in England - National Teams

National Teams

The official British national Australian Rules football squad is known as the British Bulldogs and has competed in all of the AFL International Cups in Melbourne. The squad is made up of players mainly from the London clubs, although regional clubs including the Reading Roos and Nottingham Scorpions in particular have provided large numbers of players in recent years. The Bulldogs squad for the 2008 International Cup was the first to include players from the Welsh Australian Rules Football League (WARFL).

A separate English representative team was organised by Aussie Rules UK under the name England Dragonslayers. The Dragonslayers squads have so far been almost exclusively drawn from the ARUK Regional leagues, although some players from the Great Britain Bulldogs have also played for the Dragonslayers.

There has been speculation that England will eventually field national sides at the International Cup, but this has not been officially stated by AFL Britain.

Famous quotes containing the words national and/or teams:

Universal suffrage should rest upon universal education. To this end, liberal and permanent provision should be made for the support of free schools by the State governments, and, if need be, supplemented by legitimate aid from national authority.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

A sturdy lad from New Hampshire or Vermont who in turn tries all the professions, who teams it, farms it, peddles, keeps a school, preaches, edits a newspaper, goes to Congress, buys a township, and so forth, in successive years, and always like a cat falls on his feet, is worth a hundred of these city dolls. He walks abreast with his days and feels no shame in not “studying a profession,” for he does not postpone his life, but lives already.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
