Australia Men's National Field Hockey Team

The Australia men's national field hockey team (nicknamed the Kookaburras) are Australia's national men's field hockey team, and one of the nation's most successful top level sporting teams. They are the only Australian team in any sport to receive medals at the last five Summer Olympic Games (1992–2008), and have placed in the top four in every Olympics since 1980. They also won the Hockey World Cup in 1986 and 2010.

The Kookaburras' inability to win an Olympic gold medal despite their perennial competitiveness, led many in the Australian hockey community to speak of a "curse" afflicting the team, finally broken in 2004 with the win in Athens.

Famous quotes containing the words australia, men, national, field and/or team:

It is very considerably smaller than Australia and British Somaliland put together. As things stand at present there is nothing much the Texans can do about this, and ... they are inclined to shy away from the subject in ordinary conversation, muttering defensively about the size of oranges.
Alex Atkinson, British humor writer. repr. In Present Laughter, ed. Alan Coren (1982)

Sometimes they are little cats mewing and scratching
at the door, sometimes they are her grandmother’s voice,
and sometimes they are gigantic men of light whispering
to her to get up, to get up, to get up.
    Joy Harjo (b. 1951)

Humanism, it seems, is almost impossible in America where material progress is part of the national romance whereas in Europe such progress is relished because it feels nice.
    Paul West (b. 1930)

Is not the tremendous strength in men of the impulse to creative work in every field precisely due to their feeling of playing a relatively small part in the creation of living beings, which constantly impels them to an overcompensation in achievement?
    Karen Horney (1885–1952)

    Is my team ploughing,
That I was used to drive
    And hear the harness jingle
    When I was man alive?
    —A.E. (Alfred Edward)
