Australia At The 1976 Summer Olympics

Australia competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada. 180 competitors, 146 men and 34 women, took part in 115 events in 20 sports.

Australia's performance at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games was its worst in almost four decades. For only the fourth time in the 21 modern Olympic Games, Australia failed to win a gold medal. It won just one silver and four bronze medals, most of them in the lower-profile sports. It was this result that spurred Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser to set up the Australian Institute of Sport.

Famous quotes containing the words australia and/or summer:

I like Australia less and less. The hateful newness, the democratic conceit, every man a little pope of perfection.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

I know I am but summer to your heart,
And not the full four seasons of the year.
    Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892–1950)
