Auckland City Libraries

Auckland City Libraries was a network of 17 public libraries and a mobile library operated by Auckland City Council. In November 2010, Auckland's local councils merged to create the Auckland Council, which meant that the Auckland City Libraries network was merged with six other Auckland public library systems to form Auckland Libraries. Auckland Libraries is currently the largest public library network in the Southern Hemisphere with 55 branches from Wellsford to Waiuku.

The building that currently houses the Central City library was opened in 1971.

Despite the merging of the libraries, Auckland City Libraries still exists in the form of a separate digital entity: it has a separate website and digital library with a variety of resources including eBooks, online encyclopaedias, and digitised newspapers and journals.

Famous quotes containing the word city:

Without infringing on the liberty we so much boast, might we not ask our professional Mayor to call upon the smokers, have them register their names in each ward, and then appoint certain thoroughfares in the city for their use, that those who feel no need of this envelopment of curling vapor, to insure protection may be relieved from a nuisance as disgusting to the olfactories as it is prejudicial to the lungs.
    Harriot K. Hunt (1805–1875)
