Atlanta Black Crackers - Negro American League

Negro American League

The Black Crackers were purchased and moved into the newly formed Negro American League in 1938. The team went on to win the second half pennant in 1938, but scheduling problems and umpire controversies caused their series with the Memphis Red Sox to be canceled. The team was moved to Indianapolis following the 1938 season, and played as the Indianapolis ABCs.

Famous quotes containing the words negro, american and/or league:

We can rejoice that the time has arrived when millions of Negro Americans can step out of the shadows, and walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights.
    Hubert H. Humphrey (1911–1978)

What a terrible thing has happened to us all! To you there, to us here, to all everywhere. Peace who was becoming bright-eyed, now sits in the shadow of death; her handsome champion has been killed as he walked by her very side. Her gallant boy is dead. What a cruel, foul, and most unnatural murder! We mourn here with you, poor, sad American people.
    Sean O’Casey (1884–1964)

I am not impressed by the Ivy League establishments. Of course they graduate the best—it’s all they’ll take, leaving to others the problem of educating the country. They will give you an education the way the banks will give you money—provided you can prove to their satisfaction that you don’t need it.
    Peter De Vries (b. 1910)
