Criticism

A statistical study was done on the predictive power of Indian astrology. The study found no statistically significant effects in the predictive quality among 51 astrologers.

The study was actually specific to the predictive power of Indian astrology in regards to intellectual and academic ability not physical/psychological/emotional compatibility. The birth details of 200 students, 100 high academic achieving students and 100 mentally disabled students, were collected. Natal charts were created for each student for the purposes of this study. The charts were then mixed and randomized. Sets of 40 randomly selected charts were sent to each of the 51 participating astrologers. They were asked to determine which category each of their 40 charts belonged in, high academic achievement or mental disability. Only 27 of the 51 participating astrologers sent results back in. The data was then calculated and analyzed to reveal that the "success rate marginally less than that what would be achieved by tossing a coin" (Narlikar, 641).

Famous quotes containing the word criticism:

People try so hard to believe in leaders now, pitifully hard. But we no sooner get a popular reformer or politician or soldier or writer or philosopher—a Roosevelt, a Tolstoy, a Wood, a Shaw, a Nietzsche, than the cross-currents of criticism wash him away. My Lord, no man can stand prominence these days. It’s the surest path to obscurity. People get sick of hearing the same name over and over.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

It is the will of God that we must have critics, and missionaries, and Congressmen, and humorists, and we must bear the burden. Meantime, I seem to have been drifting into criticism myself. But that is nothing. At the worst, criticism is nothing more than a crime, and I am not unused to that.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
