Other Astragalus spp. are known to cause severe poisonings in livestock due to indolizine alkaloids, aliphatic nitro compounds and accumulated selenium. None of these constituents have been detected in the medicinal species Astragalus membranaceus used in dietary supplements and TCM preparations.
