Assyrian Independence

The Assyrian independence (also known as the Assyrian Question) is a political movement and ideology that supports the creation of an Assyrian state or an autonomy for the Syriac-speaking Christian Assyrian people in northern Iraq.

The issue of Assyrian independence has been brought up many times throughout the course of history from the end of World War I to the present-day Iraq War. The Assyrian-inhabited area of Iraq is located primarily but not exclusively in the Ninawa-Mosul region in northern Iraq where the biblical Assyrian capitals of Nineveh and Ashur were located. This area is known as the "Assyrian Triangle."

Famous quotes containing the words assyrian and/or independence:

The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold,
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold:
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)

...there was the annual Fourth of July picketing at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. ...I thought it was ridiculous to have to go there in a skirt. But I did it anyway because it was something that might possibly have an effect. I remember walking around in my little white blouse and skirt and tourists standing there eating their ice cream cones and watching us like the zoo had opened.
