Asilidae - Systematics

Systematics

The family of Asilidae currently includes over 7000 described species in about 530 genera. The taxonomy is still under study in the light of new specimens and cladistic analysis. The traditional subfamilies, variously divided into tribes, were as follows:

  • Apocleinae . Includes 65 genera.
  • Asilinae . Includes 109 genera.
  • Dasypogoninae . Comprises 68 genera divided among the tribes Blepharepiini, Dasypogonini, Isopogonini, Lastaurini, Megapodini, Molobratiini, Thereutriini
  • Dioctriinae . Includes 12 genera divided among the tribes Dioctriini and Echthodopini
  • Laphriinae . Includes 80 genera divided among the tribes Andrenosomini, Atomosiini, Ctenotini,
  • Dasylechiini, Dasytrichini, Laphriini, Neophoneini
  • Laphystiinae . Includes 29 genera.
  • Leptogastrinae . Includes 18 genera.
  • Ommatiinae Includes 8 species.
  • Stenopogoninae. Includes 117 genera distributed among
  • Stichopogoninae . Includes 11 genera.
  • Trigonomiminae . Includes 11 genera.

A 2009 revision by Dikow is based on a cladistic analysis. He suppresses the two subfamilies Apocleinae and Laphystiinae, and defines five new subfamilies:

  • Bathypogoninae
  • Brachyrhopalinae
  • Phellinae
  • Tillobromatinae
  • Willistonininae
