Artistic gymnastics has been contested at the Summer Olympics since the first modern Olympic games in Athens. Thirty-three distinct nations have won medals at the Olympics. Athletes representing the former Soviet Union have captured 200 medals (including medals won by the Unified Team at Barcelona), almost 25% of the total medal count; Athletes representing Japan, the United States, Germany, and Romania have captured a further 35% of awarded medals in artistic gymnastics.
