History
Arthritis Care, or the British Rheumatic Association (BRA) as it was then known, was founded by Arthur Mainwaring Bowen on 1 February 1947. That October the association had 554 prospective members.
By the time of Bowen’s death on 31 January 1980 Arthritis Care had grown in to a national organisation with a wide range of services for people with arthritis. In that year Arthritis News was published for the first time. It ran to 12 pages and had an initial print-run of 35,000.
Today, Arthritis Care is the UK's largest charity dedicated to supporting people with arthritis. It offers information and support to all people with arthritis through its helpline, website, self-management and personal development programmes and campaigns locally and nationally to make sure people with arthritis have access to treatments and services.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“In the history of the human mind, these glowing and ruddy fables precede the noonday thoughts of men, as Aurora the suns rays. The matutine intellect of the poet, keeping in advance of the glare of philosophy, always dwells in this auroral atmosphere.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“It may be well to remember that the highest level of moral aspiration recorded in history was reached by a few ancient JewsMicah, Isaiah, and the restwho took no count whatever of what might not happen to them after death. It is not obvious to me why the same point should not by and by be reached by the Gentiles.”
—Thomas Henry Huxley (182595)
“Yet poetry, though the last and finest result, is a natural fruit. As naturally as the oak bears an acorn, and the vine a gourd, man bears a poem, either spoken or done. It is the chief and most memorable success, for history is but a prose narrative of poetic deeds.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
