Still, after many years, in distant lands,
Still nourishing in thy bewildered brain
That wild, unquenched, deep-sunken, old-world pain—
    Say, will it never heal?
    —Matthew Arnold (1822–1888)

I defied nothing at all. I ignored the law because I didn’t know it existed. It didn’t occur to me that anyone would want to curb my inspiration.
    —Margaret Anderson (1886–1973)

In their eyes I have seen
the pin men of madness in marathon trim
race round the track of the stadium pupil.
    Patricia K. Page (b. 1916)

Therefore awake! make haste, I say,
    And let us, without staying,
All in our gowns of green so gay
    Into the Park a-maying!
