Famous quotes containing the words armenian, evangelical, central, high and/or school:

The exile is a singular, whereas refugees tend to be thought of in the mass. Armenian refugees, Jewish refugees, refugees from Franco Spain. But a political leader or artistic figure is an exile. Thomas Mann yesterday, Theodorakis today. Exile is the noble and dignified term, while a refugee is more hapless.... What is implied in these nuances of social standing is the respect we pay to choice. The exile appears to have made a decision, while the refugee is the very image of helplessness.
    Mary McCarthy (1912–1989)

Chastity is a monkish and evangelical superstition, a greater foe to natural temperance even than unintellectual sensuality.
    Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)

The central problem of novel-writing is causality.
    Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986)

Franceska: I was happy in the life I built up for myself. I put a fine high wall of music around me and nothing could touch me. I was safe and secure. And then you had to come along and knock it all down and I hate you for that.
Maxwell: On the contrary, you love me.
    Muriel Box (b. 1905)

    And Guidobaldo, when he made
    That grammar school of courtesies
Where wit and beauty learned their trade
    Upon Urbino’s windy hill,
Had sent no runners to and fro
That he might learn the shepherds’ will.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
