Armed Forces Recreation Centers

AFRCs (Armed Forces Recreation Centers) exist to provide rest and relaxation in the form of lodging and outdoor recreation for United States military service members, Department of Defense civilian employees, US military retirees, and their families.

Rates for use of these facilities are often determined by rank, with the lowest ranking service-members paying the lowest fees. The facilities are often located in areas where typical hotel and resort rates are very high, thus allowing the members of the military lower cost vacations.

Five AFRCs operate worldwide, overseen by the United States Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command (FMWRC) in Alexandria, Virginia.

The five resorts include Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany; Shades of Green located in Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida; Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul, Korea; the Hale Koa Hotel in Hawaii; and Cape Henry Inn on Joint Expeditionary Base East near Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Famous quotes containing the words armed, forces, recreation and/or centers:

    it pleaseth me when I see through the meadows
    The tents and pavilions set up, and great joy have I
    When I see o’er the campana knights armed and horses arrayed.

    And it pleaseth me when the scouts set in flight the folk with
    their goods;
    And it pleaseth me when I see coming together after them an host of
    armed men.
    Bertrans De Born (fl. 12th century)

    There will be no greater burden on our generation than to organize the forces of liberty in our time in order to make our quest of a new freedom for America.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)

    Media mystifications should not obfuscate a simple, perceivable fact; Black teenage girls do not create poverty by having babies. Quite the contrary, they have babies at such a young age precisely because they are poor—because they do not have the opportunity to acquire an education, because meaningful, well-paying jobs and creative forms of recreation are not accessible to them ... because safe, effective forms of contraception are not available to them.
    Angela Davis (b. 1944)

    But look what we have built ... low-income projects that become worse centers of delinquency, vandalism and general social hopelessness than the slums they were supposed to replace.... Cultural centers that are unable to support a good bookstore. Civic centers that are avoided by everyone but bums.... Promenades that go from no place to nowhere and have no promenaders. Expressways that eviscerate great cities. This is not the rebuilding of cities. This is the sacking of cities.
    Jane Jacobs (b. 1916)
