A Named Guardian
Arkarian is a TruthMaster, a high-ranked member of the Guard, described by Lorian as "vital to survival and success." He is also one of the Named, whose identities' revelation brings about the final conflict of the Guard and the Order. As such, he receives a whip, one of the weapons designated for the Named. Its ability is "to do anything with motion and matter, like igniting fires, moving masses of water, creating a dust storm, or simply destroying . . . creatures."
Though it is never expressly stated which of his powers are innate, and which are gifts, it is assumed that Arkarian's natural skills are telepathy (dubbed TruthSeeing in the universe of the Guardians of Time) and a form of telekinesis. The latter, never actually named or explained, manifests itself in an ability to make objects appear and disappear at will. In addition, Arkarian is able to give comfort through touch. The true quantity and extent of his powers, those given by the Tribunal and learned from Lorian or otherwise, are unknown. Also he is able to make pain subside through touch.

Famous quotes containing the words named and/or guardian:
“The last public hanging in the State took place in 1835 on Prince Hill.... On the fatal day, the victim, a man named Watkins, peering through the iron bars of his cell, and seeing the townfolk scurrying to the place of execution, is said to have remarked, Why is everyone running? Nothing can happen until I get there.”
—Administration for the State of Con, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
“More than ten million women march to work every morning side by side with the men. Steadily the importance of women is gaining not only in the routine tasks of industry but in executive responsibility. I include also the woman who stays at home as the guardian of the welfare of the family. She is a partner in the job and wages. Women constitute a part of our industrial achievement.”
—Herbert Hoover (18741964)
