Area Code 912 - History

History

Area code 912 was split from area code 404 in 1954. When it was created, it covered the entire southern half of the state, including the cities of Savannah, Macon, and Albany.

This region of Georgia is not as densely populated as the north, so 912 remained unchanged for 46 years. By the start of the 21st century, however, the proliferation of cell phones and pagers forced a split. On August 1, 2000, area code 912 was split into three parts, with Savannah and the eastern portion retaining 912. The western portion (centered around Albany) became area code 229, while the northern portion (centered around Macon) became area code 478. Permissive dialing continued throughout the old 912 territory until August 1, 2001.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

    The myth of independence from the mother is abandoned in mid- life as women learn new routes around the mother—both the mother without and the mother within. A mid-life daughter may reengage with a mother or put new controls on care and set limits to love. But whatever she does, her child’s history is never finished.
    Terri Apter (20th century)

    You that would judge me do not judge alone
    This book or that, come to this hallowed place
    Where my friends’ portraits hang and look thereon;
    Ireland’s history in their lineaments trace;
    Think where man’s glory most begins and ends
    And say my glory was I had such friends.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    As I am, so shall I associate, and so shall I act; Caesar’s history will paint out Caesar.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
