Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis - History

History

Until 1940, the ‘’Archaeological Museum of Preveza – Nikopolis’’ was located in an Ottoman mosque, in the city of Preveza, Greece. In 1940, the mosque was bombed by Italian aircraft and was partially destroyed. Some of the exhibits were stolen. After the Second World War, the mosque was demolished by the Greek state. In 1965 the state built a small Archaeological Museum inside the Byzantine walls of ancient Nikopolis: 39°0′29″N 20°44′7″E / 39.00806°N 20.73528°E / 39.00806; 20.73528. From 1998 to 2006 a new archaeological museum was built 5 km North of Preveza. In July 2009, the new Archaeological museum of Nicopolis was open to public (http://www.nicopolismuseum.gr).

    Caresse Crosby (1892–1970)

I believe that history might be, and ought to be, taught in a new fashion so as to make the meaning of it as a process of evolution intelligible to the young.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

The whole history of civilisation is strewn with creeds and institutions which were invaluable at first, and deadly afterwards.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)
