Archaeological Museum of Astypalaia

The Archaeological Museum of Astypalaia is a museum in Astypalaia, Greece. The rights to the museum were initially granted to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture by the Ecclesiastical Charity Fund of Astypalaia in 1994. An exhibition was organized from 1995-1996, eventually leading to the opening of the museum in September 1998.

The Astypalaia Archaeological Museum is located in a ground-floor hall, and contains artifacts ranging from the prehistoric period down to medieval times. Of particular note are grave offerings from two Mycenaean tombs that were excavated at Armenohori and a miniature bronze Roman statue of Aphrodite, excavated at Trito Marmari. The museum also contains a substantial collection of coins which were found during excavations.

Famous quotes containing the word museum:

I never can pass by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York without thinking of it not as a gallery of living portraits but as a cemetery of tax-deductible wealth.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
