Arcata High School - Arts

Arts

Arcata High School has a number of special programs, including the Arcata Arts Institute, which helps students with a particular interest in the arts (music, dance, acting, etc.) to pursue their interests. Arcata high hosts the ARMACK Orchestra, conducted by Carol Jacobson.

As part of the Northern Humboldt Union High School District, Arcata High School is closely affiliated with the only other public high school in the district, McKinleyville High School, and groups such as the orchestra and the jazz band, as well as some drama productions combine students from the schools.

In fall of 2007 all four choir members who tried out for the California State Honor Choir were accepted.

Famous quotes containing the word arts:

    So in peace our tasks we ply,
    Pangur Ban, my cat, and I;
    In our arts we find our bliss,
    I have mine and he has his.
    Unknown. Pangur Ban (l. 25–28)

    For me, the principal fact of life is the free mind. For good and evil, man is a free creative spirit. This produces the very queer world we live in, a world in continuous creation and therefore continuous change and insecurity. A perpetually new and lively world, but a dangerous one, full of tragedy and injustice. A world in everlasting conflict between the new idea and the old allegiances, new arts and new inventions against the old establishment.
    Joyce Cary (1888–1957)

    What ails it, intrinsically, is a dearth of intellectual audacity and of aesthetic passion. Running through it, and characterizing the work of almost every man and woman producing it, there is an unescapable suggestion of the old Puritan suspicion of the fine arts as such—of the doctrine that they offer fit asylum for good citizens only when some ulterior and superior purpose is carried into them.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)
