Reading of The Fatiha (Engagement Celebration)
- For Chapter 1 of the Qur'an, see: Sura al-Fatiha,
The bride's family hosts a reception in their home, where the groom formally asks for the bride's hand in marriage from her father or the eldest man in the family. After the father agrees, the families read the Fatiha (the first sura in the Quran) and serve sharbat, a sweet cordial prepared from flowers or fruit (usually in Egypt) or Turkish coffee (usually in the Levant).

Famous quotes containing the word reading:
“After reading Howitts account of the Australian gold-diggings one evening,... I asked myself why I might not be washing some gold daily, though it were only the finest particles, why I might not sink a shaft down to the gold within me, and work that mine.... At any rate, I might pursue some path, however solitary and narrow and crooked, in which I could walk with love and reverence.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
