    • The Oakland Raiders select Louisiana State University quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the first overall pick.
    • The big surprise of the first round comes when the Cleveland Browns, who had selected offensive tackle Joe Thomas with the third overall pick, make a trade with the Dallas Cowboys for the 22nd pick and choose Ohio-born quarterback Brady Quinn.
