Apollo 15, Lunar Surface

Apollo 15, Lunar Surface

Apollo 15 Commander David Scott and Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin spent three days on the Moon and a total of 18½ hours outside the spacecraft on lunar extra-vehicular activity. The mission was the first not to land in a lunar mare, instead landing at the base of the Apennine Mountains, near Hadley Rille. The crew explored the area using the first Lunar rover allowing them to travel much further from the Lunar Module lander than had previously been possible. They collected a total of 77 kg (170 lb) of lunar surface material.

Famous quotes containing the words apollo, lunar and/or surface:

“Epic poem,—ten thousand lines—revolution of July—composed it on the spot—Mars by day, Apollo by night,—bang the field-piece, twang the lyre.”
    Charles Dickens (1812–1870)

A bird half wakened in the lunar noon
Sang halfway through its little inborn tune.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

We’ve forgotten what it’s like not to be able to reach the light switch. We’ve forgotten a lot of the monsters that seemed to live in our room at night. Nevertheless, those memories are still there, somewhere inside us, and can sometimes be brought to the surface by events, sights, sounds, or smells. Children, though, can never have grown-up feelings until they’ve been allowed to do the growing.
    Fred Rogers (20th century)
