Apache Mall

Apache Mall is the largest enclosed shopping space in Rochester, Minnesota. It was built in 1969 at the intersection of U.S. Route 52 and U.S. Route 14. The Mall's food court has had free wi-fi access provided by the city's only cable television company, Charter Communications since January 2007. Apache Mall is managed by General Growth Properties, of which filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 16, 2009.

History: ""Apache Mall"" opened in 1969 on former farmland purchased from George Baihly. By the mid-1960s, southwest Rochester had grown significantly, with the extension of U.S. Route 52 past U.S. Route 14 (which had been the highway's termination point for a few years). The extension of the freeway helped extend the city's "belt-line" in some respects with a push south. Suburban development had taken hold by this point and over the next twenty-five years, the area would grow quite a bit.

Currently, the Sears in the Apache Mall is on the company's list of stores to be shut down. Though the exact shut-down date has not been decided, the earliest time would be in 2014. A Sears Hometown store is planned to open sometime in 2013, even though the mall store will still be open for at least another year. When the Sears does close, the space is planned to be divided into smaller spaces for tenants.

Famous quotes containing the words apache and/or mall:

The Apache have a legend that the coyote brought them fire and that the bear in his hibernations communes with the spirits of the “overworld” and later imparts the wisdom gained thereby to the medicine men.
—Administration in the State of Arizona, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

A father ... knows exactly what those boys at the mall have in their depraved little minds because he once owned such a depraved little mind himself. In fact, if he thinks enough about the plans that he used to have for young girls, the father not only will support his wife in keeping their daughter home but he might even run over to the mall and have a few of those boys arrested.
    Bill Cosby (20th century)
