A student of the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway, MacKenzie left for the mainland to study history at Glasgow University. She obtained a MA Honours and intended to become a teacher. She returned to the Isle of Lewis, where she met a producer for Grampian TV, (now STV North), who was on holiday. He offered her a screen test, and she embarked on a career as a journalist and broadcaster that spanned more than twenty five years.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or years:

All of Western tradition, from the late bloom of the British Empire right through the early doom of Vietnam, dictates that you do something spectacular and irreversible whenever you find yourself in or whenever you impose yourself upon a wholly unfamiliar situation belonging to somebody else. Frequently it’s your soul or your honor or your manhood, or democracy itself, at stake.
    June Jordan (b. 1939)

Love, that is all I asked, a little love, daily, twice daily, fifty years of twice daily love like a Paris horse-butcher’s regular, what normal woman wants affection?
    Samuel Beckett (1906–1989)
