Anna Maria Island - Island Culture

Island Culture

The island is home to several cultural organizations, including Cultural Connections, a coalition of the island's cultural venues, along with Anna Maria Island Artists Guild; a local theater company, The Island Players; the Anna Maria Island Community Chorus & Orchestra (AMICCO), Anna Maria Island Historical Society; Island Gallery West; and The Studio at Gulf and Pine. The group produces an island-wide arts weekend each November called artsHOP. The Anna Maria Island Art League closed abruptly in May 2012, citing financial and adminstrative issues.

Famous quotes containing the words island and/or culture:

We crossed a deep and wide bay which makes eastward north of Kineo, leaving an island on our left, and keeping to the eastern side of the lake. This way or that led to some Tomhegan or Socatarian stream, up which the Indian had hunted, and whither I longed to go. The last name, however, had a bogus sound, too much like sectarian for me, as if a missionary had tampered with it; but I knew that the Indians were very liberal. I think I should have inclined to the Tomhegan first.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The aggregate of all knowledge has not yet become culture in us. Rather it would seem as if, with the progressive scientific penetration and dissection of reality, the foundations of our thinking grow ever more precarious and unstable.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)
