Animal Cops in The Netherlands

The Animal Cops series inspired the formation of a 500-strong animal police force (Dutch: Dierenpolitie), with full law-enforcement powers in the Netherlands, as agreed by the Dutch government coalition which formed in 2010. The first Dutch animal cops were officially certified on December 2, 2011 by the Security and Justice minster Ivo Opstelten.

The Party for the Animals criticized the plan because the animal cops are only allowed to investigate the abuse of pets, not the abuse of farm animals. For the same reason, the Dutch animal cops are sometimes mockingly called the guinea pig police (Dutch: caviapolitie).

Famous quotes containing the words animal, cops and/or netherlands:

‘Tis said that courage is common, but the immense esteem in which it is held proves it to be rare. Animal resistance, the instinct of the male animal when cornered, is no doubt common; but the pure article, courage with eyes, courage with conduct, self-possession at the cannon’s mouth, cheerfulness in lonely adherence to the right, is the endowment of elevated characters.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Jim Wilson: Cops have no friends. Nobody likes a cop. On either side of the law. Nobody.
Captain Brawley: Is that what you want? People to like you? Then you’re in the wrong business and you ought to get out.
Jim Wilson: It’s the only job I know. Has been for eleven years now.
Captain Brawley: Then make up your mind to be a cop. Not a gangster with a badge.
    —A.I. (Albert Isaac)

Greece is a sort of American vassal; the Netherlands is the country of American bases that grow like tulip bulbs; Cuba is the main sugar plantation of the American monopolies; Turkey is prepared to kow-tow before any United States pro-consul and Canada is the boring second fiddle in the American symphony.
    Andrei Andreyevich Gromyko (1909–1989)
