The horror movie The Exorcist (1973) featured a scene in which the protagonist, a young girl, is subjected to carotid angiography. The scene was portrayed accurately by medical personnel—rather than actors—who regularly performed the procedure in real life. Famous quotes containing the words popular and/or culture:

I do not see why, since America and her autumn woods have been discovered, our leaves should not compete with the precious stones in giving names to colors; and, indeed, I believe that in course of time the names of some of our trees and shrubs, as well as flowers, will get into our popular chromatic nomenclature.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

If mass communications blend together harmoniously, and often unnoticeably, art, politics, religion, and philosophy with commercials, they bring these realms of culture to their common denominator—the commodity form. The music of the soul is also the music of salesmanship. Exchange value, not truth value, counts.
    Herbert Marcuse (1898–1979)
