Androgynous Peripheral Attach System - Design

Design

APAS was designed by Vladimir Syromyatnikov of the Moscow-based RSC Energia and has roots in the Apollo-Soyuz program. The idea behind the design is that unlike with the probe-and-drogue docking system, any APAS docking ring can mate with any other APAS docking ring, both sides are androgynous. In each docking there is however, an active and a passive side, but both sides can fulfill either role. There are 3 basic variations of the APAS system.

Famous quotes containing the word design:

If I commit suicide, it will not be to destroy myself but to put myself back together again. Suicide will be for me only one means of violently reconquering myself, of brutally invading my being, of anticipating the unpredictable approaches of God. By suicide, I reintroduce my design in nature, I shall for the first time give things the shape of my will.
    Antonin Artaud (1896–1948)

You can make as good a design out of an American turkey as a Japanese out of his native stork.
—For the State of Illinois, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. There are no prima donnas in engineering.
    Freeman Dyson (b. 1923)
