Tenure As Mumbai Police Chief
Roy's appointment whether deliberately or indeliberately resulted in the shifting of public and media attention from the "Telgi scam" to the moral policing agenda of home minister R R Patil apart from other neglected matters such as betting.
Early in his tenure, Roy conducted a "major crackdown" raiding 52 bars across the city in just 1 night which resulted in arrests of 1500 people including bar girls, bar owners and patrons on charges of obscenity, prostitution and illegal liquor consumption.
On March 9, 2004, a special court asked Roy to look into a complaint against "encounter specialist" Daya Nayak for his alleged underworld links and decide whether to sanction prosecution under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. Mr. A. N. Roy now serves as Director of HDFC bank Ltd

Famous quotes containing the words tenure, police and/or chief:
“It might be seen by what tenure men held the earth. The smallest stream is mediterranean sea, a smaller ocean creek within the land, where men may steer by their farm bounds and cottage lights. For my own part, but for the geographers, I should hardly have known how large a portion of our globe is water, my life has chiefly passed within so deep a cove. Yet I have sometimes ventured as far as to the mouth of my Snug Harbor.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Now, honestly: if a large group of ... demonstrators blocked the entrances to St. Patricks Cathedral every Sunday for years, making it impossible for worshipers to get inside the church without someone escorting them through screaming crowds, wouldnt some judge rule that those protesters could keep protesting, but behind police lines and out of the doorways?”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1953)
“On the whole, yes, I would rather be the Chief Justice of the United States, and a quieter life than that which becomes at the White House is more in keeping with the temperament, but when taken into consideration that I go into history as President, and my children and my childrens children are the better placed on account of that fact, I am inclined to think that to be President well compensates one for all the trials and criticisms he has to bear and undergo.”
—William Howard Taft (18571930)
