Political Career
In December 27, 2011 was elected Mayor of Madrid, after Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón resigned on being designated Minister of Justice. She is the first female Mayor of the city.
She has been on the Madrid City Council since 2003, where she has been Second Lieutenant Mayor and headed the Departments of Social Services (2003-2007) and of the Environment (2007-2011) She has been criticised for failure to tackle Madrid's air pollution which frequently exceeded permitted levels while she was responsible for the city's environment.
