Famous quotes containing the words evening, wild, man and/or fischer:

The difference between the actual and the ideal force of man is happily figured in by the schoolmen, in saying, that the knowledge of man is an evening knowledge, vespertina cognitio, but that of God is a morning knowledge, matutina cognitio.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The wild beasts, sparrows pecking the llamas’ grain,
Pigeons settling on the bears’ bread, buzzards
Tearing the meat the flies have clouded. . . .
    Randall Jarrell (1914–1965)

It is so wonderful to our neurologists that a man can see without his eyes, that it does not occur to them that is just as wonderful that he should see with them; and that is ever the difference between the wise and the unwise: the latter wonders at what is unusual, the wise man wonders at the usual.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the world as changeable. And help to change it.
    —Ernst Fischer (1899–1972)
