An Early Martyr and Other Poems

An Early Martyr and Other Poems was published by the American poet William Carlos Williams in 1935. It was originally published in New York by The Alcestis Press.

The collection includes poems such as "An Early Martyr" (for which the entire book is named), "Flowers By The Sea," "Proletarian Portrait," and the often anthologized "The Yachts." It also serves as a companion piece for another collection of Williams' poetry, Adam & Eve & The City, published a year later in 1936.

Famous quotes containing the words early, martyr and/or poems:

Today’s pressures on middle-class children to grow up fast begin in early childhood. Chief among them is the pressure for early intellectual attainment, deriving from a changed perception of precocity. Several decades ago precocity was looked upon with great suspicion. The child prodigy, it was thought, turned out to be a neurotic adult; thus the phrase “early ripe, early rot!”
    David Elkind (20th century)

The martyr cannot be dishonored. Every lash inflicted is a tongue of fame; every prison a more illustrious abode.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Some poems are for holidays only. They are polished and sweet, but it is the sweetness of sugar, and not such as toil gives to sour bread. The breath with which the poet utters his verse must be that by which he lives.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
