Amy Sedaris - Personal Life

Personal Life

Sedaris was born in Endicott, New York, the daughter of Sharon (née Leonard) and Lou Sedaris, and grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, with her siblings, David, Lisa, Gretchen, Tiffany, and Paul ("The Rooster"). She is of half Greek descent; her father was Greek Orthodox and her mother was Protestant. She remains Greek Orthodox.

As a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman, she described two experiences with bosses. At age 16, she worked at the local Winn-Dixie supermarket. She would make fake announcements over the loudspeaker, which prompted the head cashier to confiscate the microphone. After work, she egged the cashier's car in protest. Later, as a cocktail waitress at Zanies, a comedy night club in Chicago, she was five minutes late for a shift with ice cream cone in hand. Fired that night, she took her revenge on her boss: "I took his keys and I threw them in the snow. I heard he found them in the spring."

Sedaris and her Strangers with Candy co-star Paul Dinello dated for eight years. Though their relationship ended, they have remained very close friends. She also dated actor Alan Tudyk in the early 2000s. Sedaris has never married, and has stated in several interviews that she has never wanted to be married or have children.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:

It is cowardly to fly from natural duties and take up those that suit our taste or temperament better; but it is also unwise to take an exaggerated view of personal duties, which shuts out the proper care of the mind and body entrusted to us.
    Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (1842–1911)

Had I but died an hour before this chance,
I had lived a blessed time; for from this instant
    There’s nothing serious in mortality.
All is but toys; renown and grace is dead,
The wine of life is drawn, and the mere lees
Is left this vault to brag of.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
